As part of the upcoming InterNations Relaunch, your individual member profile will also get a “face-lift”, so to speak.
Your new InterNations profile will strongly focus on what makes you a global mind: your personal expat experience and your international life and career.
What’s new?
In the new timeline, you can share your international history. Describe all your stays abroad, as well as your time back in your home country!
Be it work, travel, or other reasons for moving and visiting: you can use this feature to indicate where you have been, how long you lived there, and why you relocated.
The big world map in the header helps to visualize your timeline. It points out where you are right now and highlights every country where you have stayed so far.
Have your say!
The image below is just a first glance at the brand-new InterNations profile. To see the screenshot in full size, please click on the image!
Please take a look at this preview and let us know what you think. Just leave your feedback in a comment below.
What do you like about it? What could we do differently?

Thank you very much for giving us your feedback! Please understand that we cannot reply to each of you individually. However, we will read every comment and do our best to accommodate your feedback.
David Orinda Otieno says
It is very very wonderful. We shall work with it.
Margit says
@David Orinda Otieno: Thanks a lot! We’re glad to hear it. 🙂
Robert Brown says
The biggest appeal to me will be if this new layout will fit my smartphone better than the current one. It is very difficult to navigate the current site with a mobile device, due to the necessity to constantly manipulate the size of the display and to hunt for the action buttons.
The similarity to Facebook is of no concern to me unless you start using our information and choices for targeted advertising, as they do (I know you will not do this. It’s just my snide sense of humor, left over from the 1970s).
People who are concerned about privacy can either do as they do now: not enter the info, or, using your well designed privacy settings, only make their info available to their personal contacts. I hope you continue to respect the privacy concerns of others, although I personally do not share those concerns.
Margit says
@Robert Brown:
Thanks a lot for your comment! We are working on a mobile-friendly version – this is extremely important to us.
As for privacy concerns: there will still be privacy settings, and to the best of my knowledge, nobody is thinking of introducing Facebook-style targeted ads on InterNations. 😉
Ivan says
With all due respect its not bad, but hey how about we make it unique so to say and not copy the FB format, I know I do not like FB and that is why I closed my account, I love internations, but not a FB look a like. Ivan
Margit says
@Ivan:
Thank you for your open and honest feedback! I’m sorry that you don’t like the new design that much. However, please be aware that this is a) only a preliminary design and b) only one small part of the page. Generally speaking, we really aren’t Facebook, nor do we want to be. I think InterNations has a different focus and unique strengths, and I hope you’ll keep enjoying our network.
Saumitra Jain says
Simply it’s awesome. Looking wonderful with new look. Add a theme feature if you can like the options are available in yahoo, gmail etc.So that everyone will be able to set their own theme and that will give an amazing look to it.
Margit says
@Saumitra Jain:
Thank you for your nice comment! We’re glad to hear you like the new design. I’m afraid, though, that we are not planning individualized themes for the immediate future. But I’ll add your suggestion to the feedback I’m collecting for our Product Development team – thanks!
Katherine says
Wooww..it Does look great and Stunning too,i think i already fell in Love with the New Page,looking forward to get my page look the same :))
Regard
Kate 🙂
Margit says
@Katherine:
Thank you for your positive feedback! We’re delighted to hear the new design works so well for you.
Michael says
Lots of valid comments to most of which anyone can agree right away. Just two I’d like to mention: 1. The FB style reveals too much of personal information for my gusto and 2. The map introduction is a great idea as anyone could easily see whether that person shares experiences from the same region or countries. Other than that a nice makeover, good job, team!
Margit says
@Michael:
Thank you for your input! We really understand your privacy concerns, and we do take the issue seriously here. So, let me assure you that
– the information included in this timeline is purely optional
– there will still be privacy settings
– the profiles aren’t visible to the general public, only to registered members
Hope that helps!
Zaib Khan says
looks good
Margit says
@Zaib Khan:
Thank you! Much appreciated. 🙂
hana says
This is much much better, much more suitable for what internations really is, connecting global minds and profiles….in this approach you make it easier to read and communicate!
Margit says
@Hana:
Thank you! We’re delighted to hear you like the new profile page layout.
Jason Manuel De Herrera says
Please make the site mobile friendly… So difficult to properly manage events and contact lost attendees with a non-mobile friendly website.
This is my only request!
Margit says
@Jason Manuel De Herrera:
We are definitely working on a mobile-friendly version of our site. This is very important to us.
Yulia says
Good job! It could be interesting and useful as travelling diary:) I just wish it will be an option to choose people (group of people) who are allowed to see my page with all details and who can see just basic information.
Margit says
@Yulia:
Thanks for your positive feedback! And yes, there will be still be privacy settings available.
Peter Horth says
This is fantastic – just the way I’d like to record my travels. Now you can see where people have been, their travelling experiences and how they cope with an international life.
I found the previous home page a bit clunky – too business-like. It was more in the style of Linked-In.
Keep up the good work.
Peter.
Margit says
@Peter Horth:
Thank you for your positive feedback! We’re happy to hear that our new profile page design works so well for you.
Joanne says
This looks great! Will my posts be able to publish onto Facebook?
Instagram is the easiest to use and it links right to Facebook. I hope pictures I post on Instagram can automatically post onto Internations!!
Margit says
@Joanne:
Thank you for your suggestion! I’ll pass along your idea concerning connectivity with /cross-posting to other social media sites to our Product Development department. Right now, we are collecting feedback from this post to take into consideration, so thanks again for the input.
Tanja McGrath says
Great idea to include a facility to share your international history and for others to read it easily instead of having to go through blogs. Looking great.
Margit says
@Tanja McGrath: Thank you for positive feedback! We’re very happy that you like the new design. 🙂
Rene Alt says
What I miss the most while abroad to contact expats here, travel around China 4 months at a time and just want a chat occasionally with people who speak English locally and have similar troubles e.g. firewall of Google nothing works anymore, no maps, no translator, no APP store … what are the alternatives?
Margit says
@Rene Alt:
Thanks for commenting! I’m sorry to hear you’re having a bit of a rough time abroad.
Does InterNations work in China for you? If you have any technical problems, please contact my colleagues at [email protected]. Thank you!
Francesco Colletti says
Well done.
An improvement could be to have the possibility to indicate correct location / positioning where a member of internation is at moment (of course the user must have the possibility to enable or disable this function for privacy reason).
Sometime members of internation live in the same hotel or are in the same pub and they do not know each other.. this can be easily set with an app for mobile phones adding a link to maps.
if not clear ill be great to explain better. This could enhance the networking experience…
internation could also ask sponsorhip to some big hotel companies where usualy businesses people ot exapt are located… the receptionist could ask if people are part of internations and if the customer would like to give availability to meet other members..
Margit says
@Francesco Colletti:
Thanks a lot for your suggestions! I’m afraid, though, that a “location” feature like this isn’t being planned for the immediate future. However, we are collecting all ideas from this comment section and will pass them along to our Product Development team, so we do appreciate your input.
Ariadna says
In my opinion what Internations really needs is a mobile App (and soon!). Almost no one these days uses web browsers, rather Android or Apple apps.
The interface looks more friendly, reminds me a bit of Facebook. However I would focus more on improving “My Start Page”, “Forum” and “Upcoming Events” interface.
Margit says
@Ariadna:
Thanks for commenting! We are indeed working on a mobile-friendly version of our website. I can also assure you that the new profile page is by no means the only change ahead. For example, a new calendar for our Events & Activities will be a major part of our site relaunch.
Danny Aubeeluck says
Firstly, the new internations profile would make the network more attractive, visible and interesting.
Giving more visibility to members’ experience, international life and career would, I believe, benefit members and interactions between members.
The mobile Internations application is also a welcomed development.
It is a work in progress and the ‘face-lift’ can be implemented gradually.
Thank you for your consideration.
Margit says
@Danny Aubeeluck:
Thank you very much for your feedback! We really appreciate it. Our relaunch will indeed happen gradually, so you can look forward to many more exciting changes.
AT says
Love the new InterNations profile!
Margit says
@AT:
Thank you! We’re glad to hear this.
Judith John says
I do Not really see the difference apart from the optical issues. There is no mobile version , the logout is difficult, you can’t use it Properly with a mobile phone. What you need is an app. Or get a mobile version, like this page. Why can’t the homepage be like that? Still logging on and off is annoying. An app would be useful.
In a mobile device the font is too small and you have to turn the phone to log off.
Margit says
@Judith John:
Thank you for your honest feedback!
Please be aware that this is indeed just a preview of a new profile page design. This screenshot is by no means the entire relaunch. We are definitely working on a mobile-friendly version of our site!
Andre Angulo says
Love the new look!
You could include on the left panel if the user uses Instant Messaging: Whatsapp, Skype, Gtalk other.
Margit says
@Andre Angulo:
Thanks for the suggestion! I think this is a good idea, and I’ll let our Product Development team know about it for their “idea pool”.
Andrea says
Dear Internations Team
First I would like to thank you for all the effort you are putting into this site. You are doing great work.
Now here is my feedback to the (new) version: Personally, I think the idea to share one´s international history is a nice one. But I don´t like the layout at all. There is so much information on the page, that I just don´t want to read it, and it is just confusing. The layout reminds me of a mix between a travel blog, xing and wayn.com, which is a pity because you should not be/look like all the other sites. So far you have been different (I have been a member now for years and I love the site for being different and special) …so please keep that up 🙂
I would rather suggest to integrate another tab (next to the ones already existing) called for ex. “travel blog” or “international history” where one can post exactly the information you were thinking about.
Best wishes from Switzerland
Andrea
Margit says
@Andrea:
Thank you for your kind feedback and all your suggestions! We’re collecting feedback right now to forward it to our Product Development team. This isn’t the final version yet, and they are working on coming up with the best way to present your international history.
As for the “information overload” on that site: Please keep in mind that we filled in a lot of personal details in order to create a page design. In reality, many members max choose not to share all this — their profile pages would actually look less “busy” than our design concept.
Claire says
This looks amazing. Question: is it available with the basic membership, or only with the albatross one?
Margit says
@Claire:
Thank you! The new profile page will be definitely available for all members, Basic Members and Albatross Members alike.
Wilfried Scheuer says
Hi to everyone!
An interactive world map showing the distances and local time would be a helpful tool!
Just consider it pls!
Best regards
Wilfred
Margit says
@idona asamoah:
Thank you for your feedback! Well, we very much aim to provide a simpler, more user-friendly page, rather than making everything more complicated for you. 😉
Margit says
@Wilfried Scheuer:
Thanks for commenting! I’ll be happy to pass on your suggestion to our Product Development team to take into consideration.
idona asamoah says
i hope is not going to be complicated as Facebook and meet ups group page you can check them out and see how they have their futures
Irina says
Hi,
The new page looks nice, much better overview ovew the information compared to the old page. Reminds a little bit of facebook page.
I didnt find button for privacy settings. Will it be possible to make different information available for different people?
Also could be nice to have instant message feature.
Margit says
@Irina:
Thank you for getting in touch!
This is the view of a profile page that another visito to your profile sees. You will still be able to edit your profile and adjust privacy settings.
I’m afraid that we aren’t planning an instant messaging feature or chat at the moment.
Alan Nash says
I think it looks great and well laid out.
Margit says
@Alan Nash:
Thank you! That’s very nice to hear. 🙂
Gordana Bunjevcevic says
Hi folks!
Thanks for selecting me to be your beta tester ..
Here are my impressions:
– when I login, I do not neccessarily want to see all the data about myself on the left pane. It makes sense that visitors to my profile see this data ( and only when they click in)
– maybe it skipped me, but where is “Visitors to my profile” going to be places in the new layout?
– I like the header (reminds me of g+)
– I like the timeline
Hope it helps!
BR,
Gordana
Margit says
@Gordana Bunjevcevic:
Thank you very much for your feedback! As for the issues you raise:
– The view you see above is the profile page of another member – i.e. the one that visitors to their site see. Hence all the contact information.
– In the view of your own profile page, the “visitors to my profile” feature is definitely going to stay.
Hope that helps! 🙂
Ajith says
It looks way much better than before but I feel the profile page looks very busy we can use some icons to make it more interesting and more friendly. I am a web designer and I have designed a lot of top sites so. This is just my view. Let me know I can give design one for you….
Margit says
@Ajith:
Thanks a lot for your comment!
One reason why the profile page looks a bit “busy” right now is very simple: We put in as much information as possible for our design mock-ups; in reality, many members will not fill in quite as much, so their actual profiles will look a bit different.
Jay says
Very nice and comfortable UI design.
Margit says
@Jay:
Thank you for your positive feedback! I’m sure my colleagues from Product Development will be happy to hear it.
Tamas Filipszky says
Looks great and easy-to-master. The (current) country of residence could also be tagged though with the use of different background-colours for the current and the target countries.
You could also consider a free Albatros trial option. This could be limited (e.g. would not cover entrance fees for IN events).
Margit says
@Tamas Filipszky:
Thank you for your feedback and your suggestions! I’ll gladly forward them to Product Development, especially the use of colour-coding for the new profile. Please bear in mind that this isn’t the final version yet. I’m sure my colleagues are working on the best way of presenting everyone’s “international history”, so to speak.
As for a free Albatross trial: I’m afraid that our relaunch mainly focuses design and usability right now. But again, I’ll pass your feedback along to the responsible team. Thanks!
Berith says
This is a great design that will make internations even more attractive.
Look forward to the finished makeover.
Margit says
@Berith:
Thank you! I hope you’ll be just as satisfied with the final result when it goes live. 🙂
erincik says
site became facebook and twitter look alike, which is more practical and the map idea is great. but visited places and lived places should be in separate lists.
Margit says
@Erincik:
Thanks for your feedback! It seems that the combination of visited places and former countries/cities of residence is a bit divisive. Some people here love it, others don’t like it very much. I’ll make sure to pass this along to our Product Development team. Thanks again for your input – much appreciated.
Tim Stott says
I like the timeline and the little stories of each stay. There appears to be a section to add images of each stay, I think this should be limited to 8-10 max to tell a story and to stop people just uploading pictures of little interest.
Overall a very good look.
Margit says
@Tim Stott:
Thank you for your feedback!
As far as the pictures for each section on the timeline are concerned, I can reassure you: While members will be able to upload as many pictures to their respective albums as they want, only a limited number will be shown in the profile page itself. You have to click on “more” to see them all.
Eugen Krassitschkow says
Very nice indeed !!
Margit says
@Eugen Krassitschkow:
Thank you! Our Product Development team will be happy to hear this. 🙂
Gina says
Look good, almost a copy/paste of FB.
Can see clearly profile in one glance.
I like it.
Ehsan says
very useful but it will not satisfied my requirements.
Margit says
@Ehsan:
I’m sorry to hear that. May I ask what sort of requirements you had in mind?
Luis Saviñon says
Looks good, congratulations!
Margit says
@ Luis Saviñon:
Thank you! We’re happy to hear you liked the first glance at our new profile page.
Anna de Trejo says
It’s a very beautiful design, but he heading is too big (high) – it occupies to much of a useful space. Apart from this – I love it.
Margit says
@Anna de Trejo: Thank you for your comment!
I’ll pass on your feedback to our Product Development team.
Maya Budimaryati Mau says
This Great..!!!
very fantastic.
Margit says
@Maya Budimaryati Mau:
Thanks for your feedback! We’re glad to hear you like it.
Lucia Stan says
It looks great, star to look a bit with Facebook…
Many people ask what is twinkle and how can one get rid of those received?
Lucia
Margit says
@Lucia Stan:
Thanks for commenting!
A twinkle is just a friendly and casual way of saying “hello”, like smiling or waving at someone.
If you click on the “Twinkle” icon in the “My Notification” menu at the top right of the startpage, you’ll get to an overview of your latest notifications, including your Twinkles. Just click on “Ok I’ve seen it”, and it will go away without any response to the person who’s sent it.
If you have any other issues or questions concerning the InterNations site, please write to my colleagues at [email protected]. Thanks!
Suhail says
This is a much awaited facelift.
Please don’t forget to add an interactive map which updates automatically and highlight the countries lived and visited along with all the pictures tagged to that location. In the photo section, there must be an option to create Albums with sharing options. A mini-blog section can be added for people like me who would like to share their experience in fewer words in a separate column.
Cheers!
Margit says
@Suhail:
Thank you for this detailed comment and your suggestions!
I’ll make sure to forward them to our Product Development team who are still working on fine-tuning the new page. This is a preliminary design only, and not the finished product yet.
As for other features, like the photos section, the relaunch will be implemented gradually. But we’ll be happy to take suggestions for them into consideration.
Philip says
It looks very eye catching in my opinion.
Margit says
@Philip:
Thank you for your comment! It’s nice to hear you like the new profile page design.
Ahmad Sacca says
Looks better
will have to test
Margit says
@Ahmad Sacca:
Thank you! Enjoy the beta testing program once it starts! If you sign up via this official link, we will notify you whenever we roll out new features for testing.
Varun says
Hopefully you wont be sued by Facebook, this has quite some resemblance to their earlier profile page…good luck
Margit says
@Varun:
I don’t think Mr Zuckerberg’s lawyers will descend on us any time soon. 😉 I think there is a general trend towards “chronoligical/timeline design” on social networking sites, and any similarities just help to enhance usability across the internet.
Hamayet says
Why not ? It s a nice plus … But don t expect it to be a revolution … People will be proud of shring their two days stay in exotic destinations but wont be able to talk about it ..if i had money to invest in the website I would tryto improove the website for smartphones … From my Iphone … It s that hard to navigate that sometimes i give up from connecting to Internations just because of the lake of user friendly screen… Thank you anyway for existing! Cheers Youssef
Margit says
@Youssef:
Thank you for your honest feedback! The new profile page is just one part of the site relaunch; we are definitely working on a mobile-friendly version of our site.
Aaron Roth says
I like this new look, it looks very clean and straightforward. I like that it follows the clean look of some of the other big networking sites like facebook and linkedin.
One of the best ways I’ve met people is through activities, either the smaller groups or the more official events. Could you all make those prominent?
I find it much easier, and much more comfortable to meet people in person and then connect with them on the site, rather than the other way around.
The web site is great for following up though, but I always do it after.
gracias!
-Aaron
Margit says
@Aaron Roth:
Thank you for your detailed feedback! The Activity Groups a member belongs to should still be displayed on their profile, below the timeline, together with their general interests. Unfortunately, the screenshot fades out at the bottom, so it’s no longer visible there.
Moreover, this is just the new profile page. The relaunch of our Events & Activities section is a separate issue, but rest assured that this feature is very important to us.
Etty Villanueva says
Great timeline! Love it!
adam says
hi,
i believe this design will bring some strong concerns towards privacy especially the timeline, because as a use i don’t want to give much of details like Facebook.
you website audience are mostly expats and we prefer limited information about us when we meet strangers over other expats, in some case it might be my boss or my colleague it would reflect another privacy concerns of the individual.
your existing design, looks perfect were i would have limited information about me and only what i want to share from your audience database.
in this NEW design i am skeptic with my privacy and what will be shared with out my knowledge to be make sure i might have to often check will there be any necessity that i should be worried what will be over-shared with out my college and who of them all will view and what necessary to be viewed, as i also don’t want to lose some potential people from your database.
this will be my observation.
Margit says
@Adam:
Thank you for your detailed comment and for openly sharing your concerns with us!
Privacy and data protection are important to us, and we certainly don’t want to emulate Facebook in that respect. I hope I can address these issues by saying:
– Most of the information displayed in the profile isn’t mandatory. When you sign up, you’ll be asked to share your full name, gender, date of birth, country of residence and country of origin — no timeline information at all. What you want to tell about your previozs stays abroad and current life is up to you entirely.
– Secondly, these profiles are only visible to registered members – not to external visitors or Google.
– Moreover, there will still be privacy settings for what you’d like to share.
Hope that helps!
Claudia Bravo says
It looks pretty cool!!! No much to add or change. It looks like you guys are doing a great job
Margit says
@Claudia Bravo:
Thank you for your comment! Our IT & Product Development team will be delighted to hear this. They have been putting a lot of work into the upcoming relaunch.
Koffi says
This looks great!
I love it!
Margit says
@Koffi:
Thank you for the feedback! We’re happy to hear you like the new design.
