Your new InterNations profile will strongly focus on what makes you a global mind: your personal expat experience and your international life and career.
What’s new?
In the new timeline, you can share your international history. Describe all your stays abroad, as well as your time back in your home country!
Be it work, travel, or other reasons for moving and visiting: you can use this feature to indicate where you have been, how long you lived there, and why you relocated.
The big world map in the header helps to visualize your timeline. It points out where you are right now and highlights every country where you have stayed so far.

this is beautiful, i just joined the group and it looks interesting. i cant wait to have my own page, probably make new fantastic friends.
It looks nice, however a mobile app is very important nowadays.

My only concern is the poor attendency of the members to the Events without cancelling at all or cancelling last minute. The poor attendance is the tradition of InterNations and already very known.
A lot of members subscribe to two different events and don’t appear at any of them. Ant thus without any concequences at all. This should not be normal and must change, otherwise it is very demotivating for people like me, who spend their precious time to organize and launch interesting events.

I’m afraid that I can’t address these concerns directly here or give helpful advice, as I’m not working for our Activity Groups or Events Team, and I’m therefore not up-to-date on such issues.

A bit too similar to Facebook perspective but everything is clear and well positioned.
Obviously I think that there will be personal settings about information that can be displayed.

Thanks a lot for commenting! Yes, there will still be some privacy settings, of course: We want our members to feel comfortable about sharing / not sharing information on InterNations.
I like the look of the webpage, and I appreciate it has a resemblance to Facebook. However, my criticisms are these:
1) I do not feel like keeping up with all my travel infomation, and much of it I am not sure I want to share with the world. My travels go back 30+ years, and I do not want to reconstruct my history now, especially without digital photos to upload, etc. So my timeline might look sparse or lack exact dates. Too hard.
2) Where is the stuff I really want to know? For example, I turn to the InterNations website to see my upcoming events, to see photos from the last event, etc. I would like to keep the news in the present and the HERE.
For me, I me, I am interested in networking here and now. So showing off skills, languages, work/career, map of past travels are all appropriate. But I want to connect with locals; the ones that I already know, and ones who I might want to reach out to know.
I also want to see what is going on in my city, so I want a link to restaurants and cultural news handy. The city guide stuff should be prominent.
Also a city chat might be interesting. So there should be bold links for gaining traffic, if possible.

P.S. Facebook is a success because it is highly visual with relevant information about people we know (photos) and news we care about (getting to better know our surroundings and opportunities for work, recreation and friendship).

The timeline option consists of purely voluntary information. I can really understand that you wouldn’t want to fill in your travel history for 30 years. I think everyone needs to decide for themselves what they’s like to share with other InterNations members and which periods in their lives they consider most important, especially for other expats and globe-trotters.
And please keep in mind that this is only the profile page. Our new start page will also undergo a relaunch — and there we’ll put a greater focus on your Local Community and what’s going on there!

A “Twinkle” is simply a nice way of saying hello without actually sending a personal message – a bit like smiling and waving at someone. It’s actually been a feature on InterNations since the very beginning.
Offering up all the places where one has lived and providing dates feels like a cross between a passport application and bragging rights. The current popularity of social media notwithstanding, what is the purpose of making unnecessary personal information public? For those who want it, perhaps a simple reference to their Facebook or Twitter account would suffice.
There will probably be as many people who applaud these moves as those who find it frivolous, invasive and time consuming. Fortunately it’s all optional.
More important for me is the efficient functioning of the site. Example: Even though I request that the details be saved, I generally have to log in. A tiny detail, but annoying.

Thank you for your feedback! Since we are an international network, we wanted to give our members the opportunity to specifically highlight their “expat history” and international background at one glance – that’s something that neither Facebook nor Twitter can provide in this form.
And of course divulging that information is by no means mandatory to create a profile, and there will be still be privacy settings in place.
Great job guys. I don’t see any privacy concerns, but I’m Australian and we are usually very trusting.

I’d like to share a couple of insights related to current state of the website.
1. The interface is much better and cleaner than the old one. In terms of information shared on the left side, considering the fact that most of us are expats, in general we prefer giving limited information. Having said that, there should be opt in/opt out in terms of displaying part of the information. There might be a variation of privacy issues depending on the legislation and laws in different countries. Privacy concerns need to be addressed and clear policy is recommended to be outlined, so that each member would be equipped with tools to control the “willing to share information”.
2. Design – new design is really good but I’m finding too many similarities with Facebook, and partially with Twitter. Not sure whether this might become an issue in the long run. The design is easy to navigate and “digest”.
The overall experience is really good so far. I’m looking forward to testing the new features:)

Please bear in mind that this is only a design mock-up, where we have filled in as much information as possible to see what it’ll look like. Most of the information is by no means mandatory, and there will still be privacy settings available. Hope this info helps to address some of your concerns!
